Medina, Orleans County – The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program (FLYAP) held its annual “Signing Day” at the Orleans Niagara BOCES Career and Technical Education Center in Medina. Ten students from the school’s Automated Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) program signed up for paid co-ops at eight local advanced manufacturing companies in Orleans and Niagara counties.
Seniors from the AME class are now earning paid, on-the-job experience in CNC Machining, Tool Making and other advanced manufacturing trades. In addition to the part-time position, these students receive dual enrollment college course credits at no cost through Monroe Community College (MCC).
The Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA) and MCC created FLYAP in 2018 to introduce high school students to careers in manufacturing. Since its inception, the program has connected more than 750 students to paid co-ops and/or job shadows at nearly 150 companies throughout the greater Rochester and Finger Lakes region.
The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program is the first program of its kind in New York State. For more information, you can visit www.flyap.org, call (585) 510-4278 or email info@fingerlakesyouthapprenticeship.org.
